Are you experiencing an issue with your Autoterm diesel heater?

Autoterm Diesel Heater Frequently Asked Questions

How should I operate my Autoterm diesel heater?

We recommend using Power Mode rather than Internal/External Sensor Mode. Power Mode keeps combustion stable and prevents carbon buildup. Start the heater on a high level (6–10) for the first 10 minutes, always run the heater on high (10) before shutting off.

Do I need to “exercise” the heater when not in use?

Yes. Every 2 weeks, run the heater at Level 10 for 15–20 minutes. This cleans the combustion chamber and greatly reduces soot accumulation. This also keeps fuel from gelling or spoiling between uses.

Why does my heater smoke when starting?

A small puff is normal. Heavy white smoke usually means the heater needs a “health burn.” Run at Level 10 for 20 minutes. If smoke persists, service may be needed.

What if the heater won’t start?

Check these first:

  1. Battery voltage (must be above 12.0V, ideally 12.4V+) strong current is required to get the glow plug to operating temperature.

  2. Fuel level (¼ tank minimum) diesel heater has a built in fail safe to keep you from draining the tank.

  3. Intake & exhaust under the van, inspect the intake and exhaust under the van for any blockages.

  4. Check that the fuel pump is pumping. Watch the fuel line where it connects to the diesel heater. You will see bubbles flowing throw the fuel line.
  5. Controller set to Power Mode and level 10

  6. A blower motor blockage, check the seat base and diesel heater fan is not blocked or makes excessive loud noise.
  7. Are there any Error Codes present on the display screen? Keep in mind these error codes are generic, please give us a call to dig deeper into the issue.

If it still fails to start, contact support.

Why does my heater smell like exhaust inside the van?

Stop using it immediately.
Inspect the exterior exhaust and air intake for loose clamps or damage. If the smell continues, schedule service right away.

What should I do before shutting off the heater?

Always shut down using the controller OFF button.
Never disconnect battery power or flip a breaker—the heater needs its cool-down cycle. Run on high/10 before shutting down.

What routine maintenance is recommended?

  • Every 2 weeks: 20-minute high-power burn

  • Every 3–6 months: Inspect ducts, exhaust, intake

  • Every 12–18 months: Professional carbon cleaning

What kind of fuel should I use?

Use clean diesel fuel, never use bio fuels or fuel additives.

Is the fuel pump clicking normal?

Yes. A rhythmic clicking is normal. If it becomes louder, check that the pump is mounted on rubber isolators and angled upward 15–35° on the outlet side.

Are you seeing an Error Code?
